Domain & Web Hosting

FavaWorks collaborates with IONOS and as I have discovered over the years, their support is good (24/7) and they have all of the resources necessary to create and manage a web site including domain & web hosting, email, WordPress, FTP, SSL, PHP, and SQL.

With IONOS, the first year of domain & web hosting is significantly cheaper than years two going forward but with that being said their pricing is still reasonable. Typical domains run about $20 per year and web hosting runs about $12 per month. The first year, the domain is included as is the SSL and the web hosting is about $1 per month.

NOTE: It is recommended that domain names be 15 characters or less for SEO purposes. I recommend keeping the domain name as short as possible. “While there’s no strict rule (domains can be up to 63 characters long), most strong, memorable brands aim for under 15 characters, ideally one or two simple words.” ~ChatGPT

WordPress Installation & Configuration

With the domain & web hosting in place, the next task is installing WordPress, the theme and the necessary plugins. WordPress is free and installing it is relatively easy. The theme we recommend is OceanWP which costs about $45 per year.

After installing WordPress, we need to install the necessary plugins to help in the design functions of the website. These include Elementor, the web site editor, which costs between $5 and $15 per month. Other plugins include the classic editor, Meta Tag Manager, Site Kit by Google, UpdatePlus & Yoast SEO to name a few. Fava.Works uses 13 plugins.

A WordPress plugin is a small software add-on that extends the functionality of a WordPress website without changing its core code. Plugins are necessary because they allow you to add features—such as contact forms, SEO tools, security, e-commerce, or performance optimization—quickly and easily. Instead of building custom code from scratch, you can install a plugin to handle specific tasks, saving time, reducing cost, and keeping your site flexible and scalable.

The Design process

After installing and configuring WordPress, along with the selected theme and plugins, the next step in the web design process is to build the core structure of the website. This includes creating essential pages, designing templates, and developing consistent headers and footers to ensure a cohesive user experience. In addition, establishing the site’s visual identity by creating a professional logo and favicon is necessary to strengthen branding and enhance recognition across browsers and devices.

The process involves the creation of a top and bottom header and a top and bottom footer. Designing a top header and bottom footer is a critical part of the web design process because these elements frame the entire user experience and provide structure, consistency, and usability across every page. The header typically contains key navigation, branding, and calls to action, helping users quickly understand where they are and how to move through the site. The footer reinforces navigation, offers important links, contact information, legal details, and secondary resources that users often expect to find at the bottom of a page. Together, they create visual balance, improve accessibility, support SEO through structured links, and ensure a cohesive layout that enhances both user trust and overall site functionality.

Designing a home or landing page is essential in the web design process because it serves as the primary entry point and first impression of a website. It communicates the brand’s identity, value proposition, and purpose within seconds, guiding visitors toward key actions such as exploring services, making a purchase, or getting in touch. A well-structured home or landing page establishes visual hierarchy, builds credibility, and strategically directs user flow through clear messaging and calls to action. Without a thoughtfully designed entry page, visitors may feel confused or disengaged, reducing conversions and overall effectiveness of the site.

Other Considerations

In addition to decisions about font, images, videos, and other ways to communicate your web presence vision, consideration is needed as to the Search Engine Optimization and web site responsiveness.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a vital part of the web design process because it ensures that a website is structured and built in a way that search engines can easily crawl, understand, and rank. Incorporating SEO from the beginning—through clean code, fast loading speeds, mobile responsiveness, proper heading structure, optimized images, and strategic keyword placement—helps increase visibility in search results and attract organic traffic. Designing with SEO in mind not only improves discoverability but also enhances user experience, credibility, and long-term online growth, making it an essential foundation rather than an afterthought in website development.

Responsiveness is a critical component of the web design process because it ensures that a website functions and displays properly across all devices, including desktops, tablets, and smartphones. With users accessing websites from a wide range of screen sizes, a responsive design adapts layouts, images, and navigation to provide a seamless and user-friendly experience. This not only improves usability and engagement but also reduces bounce rates and supports better search engine rankings. Designing for responsiveness from the outset ensures consistency, accessibility, and optimal performance, making the website effective and professional on any device.

Search Engine Optimization

Social media and Google Analytics both play important supporting roles in SEO by increasing visibility, improving traffic quality, and providing data-driven insights.

Social media platforms help amplify content distribution, driving more visitors to a website and increasing brand awareness. While social signals (likes, shares, comments) are not direct ranking factors, strong social engagement can lead to more backlinks, higher traffic, and greater content exposure—all of which positively influence SEO performance.

Google Analytics, on the other hand, provides measurable data about user behavior, traffic sources, bounce rates, session duration, and conversions. By analyzing this data, website owners can identify which keywords, pages, and campaigns are performing well and which need improvement. This insight allows for strategic SEO adjustments, better content optimization, and improved user experience—ultimately strengthening search engine rankings and long-term organic growth.

GTMetrix & IONOS’ Web Checker

Both of these resources are valuable tools for evaluating and improving a website’s design, particularly in terms of performance, speed, and overall user experience.

GTMetrix provides detailed insights into a website’s loading speed and performance by analyzing factors like page load time, page size, and the number of requests. It also offers recommendations for optimization, such as image compression, script minification, and caching strategies. By using GTMetrix, web designers can identify performance bottlenecks and make necessary adjustments to enhance speed, which is critical for both SEO and user engagement.

IONOS’ web checker, on the other hand, evaluates various aspects of a website’s design and functionality, including mobile responsiveness, SEO-friendliness, and security features. It checks for broken links, issues with meta tags, and mobile optimization, providing feedback on how the site can be improved for better search engine visibility and user experience. This tool helps web designers ensure that the website is accessible, user-friendly, and optimized for both desktop and mobile users.

Together, these tools offer comprehensive insights that help web designers refine their sites for better performance, usability, and SEO, ensuring a more effective online presence.

Concluding Thoughts

FavaWorks recommends a 5-page website structure as a solid foundation for most businesses, offering a streamlined yet comprehensive online presence. The Home or Landing page serves as the first point of contact, presenting key information and guiding visitors to explore further. The About Us page builds trust by sharing the company’s story, mission, and values. A dedicated Services page outlines offerings in detail, helping potential clients understand what’s available. The Conversations (BLOG) page provides valuable content to engage users, improve SEO, and demonstrate thought leadership. Finally, the Contact Us page ensures visitors can easily reach out, whether for inquiries, support, or collaboration.

This structure balances user experience, business goals, and search engine optimization, providing a comprehensive yet efficient website design.

While the website may be completed, ongoing maintenance is essential to ensure it remains up-to-date and functions smoothly. WordPress, along with its themes and plugins, is continuously updated by their developers and must remain compatible with the latest WordPress version.

FavaWorks uses trusted tools like UpdraftPlus – Backup/Restore, WP-Optimize – Clean, Compress, Cache, and WP Fastest Cache Premium to optimize performance, perform regular backups, and remove outdated cache, spam comments, and abandoned posts. This proactive maintenance ensures that your website remains secure, fast, and fully operational, and is an integral part of the ongoing service FavaWorks provides to its clients.
